How much does a week of vacation on a boat cost?

6.7.2020

A vacation at sea is often pictured by many as a necessary deep dive into their wallets. If you explicitly compare only the price of a rented apartment, then a vacation on a boat really costs a little bit more. However, if you are a traveller who is not satisfied with only lying on the beach and likes to go on a trip or two, suddenly the price of a yacht vacation equals the one of an apartment vacation.

How much does a week of vacation on a boat cost?

Yachts vs. cruise ships

Cruise ships are a popular attraction in Croatia, but contrary to a yacht they have their difficulties. An exact schedule to which you have to stick to the minute, their capacity is filled to the maximum which significantly reduces comfort and pre-packaged food that can be suitable for you or not.

A vacation on a boat has plenty of advantages. You are there only with people with whom you really want to spend your vacation; you have enough privacy and unlimited flexibility. You go where you want to go, you’ll get to know many places which you wouldn’t have had the chance to see otherwise, you’ll get to places where you wouldn’t have travelled otherwise and you certainly won’t avoid having a perfect rest on board where you can fully enjoy sunbathing or water sports.

All it takes is the right choice

Each one of us has their own visions and different preferences when it comes to a vacation. The same applies to a boat. The same way you can choose from a number of hotels and apartments, you can choose a boat that will be a perfect fit for you.

And naturally the same principle applies here as well, the more people, the lower the price. A vacation on a boat is the most worthwhile with a group of friends or entire families since in that case the price per person is the lowest. If you want to save money, order a boat outside the main season, in May, June or September when the weather conditions are still suitable for sailing. Boats are usually ordered from Saturday to Saturday, but now there is also a possibility to adjust the dates to your preference. When choosing a yacht, motor yacht or a catamaran, it’s necessary to consider its equipment in addition to its exterior. Boats are different not only in terms of size, but also in the number of cabins, bathrooms, bunk size as well as in terms of the equipment itself.  The offer is really large and diverse.

What does the price consist of?

An important aspect as far as the price is concerned is the age of the boat. The newer the boat, the more you’ll pay extra for it. It’s necessary to add fuel expenses to boat costs as well. However, this item is not at all large and it depends mainly on the number of places you want to see, the wind as well as waves. The average price of fuel for a week is calculated per person and on average represents EUR 10-20.

Another item is the price for anchorage in ports. This fee is different in every location. It’s linked to the size of the boat, the place of anchorage as well as services which are provided by the particular port. That’s why the price for anchorage starts at approximately EUR 20 and grows. But naturally you’ll also find a lot of beautiful places where you can anchor either completely for free or for a symbolic fee. You can also park at a private pier of a restaurant and that way parking is included within the price of the dinner.

The price of a vacation on a boat is also influenced by the meals you choose. Whether you prefer eating in a restaurant or cooking on your own in the boat’s kitchen as well as transport. The fewer cars you use to get to the marina, the more money you’ll save on petrol or diesel.

Here is an approximate price calculation of a week on a boat for 6 persons

Average boat price for a week: EUR 1500

Tourist tax: approx. EUR 45

Boat insurance: EUR 150

Price for anchorage at buoys/in ports/marinas: approx. EUR 200 (however, you can find places which are for free)

Boat fuel: approx. EUR 60

Parking in the marina (1 car): approx. EUR 70

Vignettes: approx. EUR 180

Petrol/diesel (1 car): approx. EUR 140

Groceries: approx. EUR 400

Price: approx. EUR 460/person

However, if no one on the crew has a captain’s licence, you’ll have to add the skipper to the expenses. On average you’ll pay EUR 700 for a week of their services.
